Daniel J. Gallivan Award
The St. Patrick's Parade Committee of Holyoke Inc.,named Karen M. Casey, of Westfield, the 2014 Daniel J. Gallivan Award Recipient.
The parade committee presents the annual award to a committee
member who is not a Holyoke resident, but has “made significant contributions to the overall success of the parade.”
Last year's recipient, Mary Jane Mathers, made the announcement. Past recipients joined her at the podium for the announcement, which was held on Sunday at the Holyoke Lodge of Elks. Karen Gallivan was a longtime member from Westfield. Casey serves on the parade's Board of Directors, Golf Tournament Committee and chairs the Love In Committee. She was the 2013 Irishwoman of the Year from the Sons of Erin and former colleen pageant coordinator in Westfield.
Karen has been willing to help with all parade activities. She is a great asset to the committee and invaluable. She always has great energy, positive attitude and wonderful to work with. Whether stuffing envelopes for the Coronation Ball, Karen is “ready, willing and able” to perform a myriad of tasks. Besides her duties on the parade committee, Karen, 52, helps manage the Westfield marchers.
She and her husband, James Casey, have two daughters, Amy and Alyssa. She works for the Westfield Housing Authority. She attended St. Mary's High School in Westfield and Becker Junior College in Worcester. She joined the Holyoke and Westfield parade committee eight years ago. “We do it because we enjoy doing it,” said Casey about her work on both committees. “I started doing it because I wanted Westfield represented in the right way.”
Her daughter, Alyssa joined the committee, too. Casey said she made “lifelong” friends on the committee. “We're together a lot from January to March. It's a lot of fun and great people. It's tiring but not tiresome,” she said. On parade day, Casey can be found in the Kmart Plaza parking lot lining up the Westfield marchers. This year, though, she will march in front with her fellow committee award recipients
